করোনাভাইরাস একটি এম-আরএনএ ভাইরাস এবং এটি স্বাভাবিক যে এখানে মিউটেশন হবে। যদিও অধিকাংশ মিউটেশনই উদ্বেগের কারণ হয় না; কিন্তু যখন স্পাইক প্রোটিনে মিউটেশন হয় এবং ভাইরাসের বিপজ্জনক চরিত্রগত পরিবর্তন হয়, তখন সেটি বিশাল উদ্বেগের কারণ হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। এমন বিপজ্জনক ধরনের প্রথম উদ্ভব ঘটে যুক্তরাজ্যে। যুক্তরাজ্যের নতুন ধরনের সংক্রমণ ক্ষমতা বেশি এবং ৩৫ শতাংশের অধিক প্রাণঘাতী।

As the policymakers continue their attempt to get vaccines from various sources, one critical question still needs to be paid the highest attention, "Is Bangladesh preparing well to roll out the vaccine once it becomes available to the nation?"

বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে করোনাভাইরাসের দ্বিতীয় ঢেউয়ের সংক্রমণ শুরু হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশে করোনার ‘প্রথম ঢেউ’ শেষ না হলেও এখনই গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে বিষয়টি আলোচিত হচ্ছে। আসন্ন শীতে করোনা পরিস্থিতি খারাপ হওয়ার যথেষ্ট আশঙ্কা রয়েছে। এ পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সামনের দিনগুলোতে করোনা মোকাবেলায় জোরালো প্রস্তুতি নেয়া অত্যন্ত জরুরি।

বিশ্বে ভ্যাকসিন আবিষ্কারের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আমাদের সমস্যা সমাধান হয়ে যাবে- এমন ভাবার কোনো কারণ নেই। একদিকে একাধিক উৎসের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ ও ভ্যাকসিন সংগ্রহের প্রচেষ্টা অব্যাহত রাখতে হবে; অন্যদিকে, ভ্যাকসিনপ্রাপ্তির পর জনগণের কাছে পৌঁছে দিতে যাতে অযাচিত বিলম্ব না হয়, সেজন্য অগ্রিম পরিকল্পনা এবং কৌশল চূড়ান্ত করতে হবে।

Although a glimpse at the recent daily case counts may present a semblance of a controlled infection situation, a deeper look shall reveal otherwise. The percentage of daily tests that come out positive (test positivity rate) is high enough to clearly indicate that a large number of infections do remain unidentified and these undetected cases are spreading the disease throughout the community.

Let us not downplay the crisis as it does not take a  mastermind to realize that the cost of underestimating  the infection can be very expensive in the long run. The low death rate and high asymptomatic cases that have been noticed in the country has granted  us an opportunity to minimize the damage, but only so if properly dealt with.

সাম্প্র্রতিক সময় বাংলাদেশে হার্ড ইমিউনিটি নিয়ে বেশকিছু কথাবার্তা হচ্ছে। এর অধিকাংশই অত্যন্ত আশঙ্কাজনক, সেসঙ্গে হতাশাজনক তো বটেই। হার্ড ইমিউনিটি’র পক্ষে যে যুক্তিগুলো সেগুলো বিশ্লেষণ করলে দেখা যাবে, এখানে অর্থনীতি, সমাজব্যবস্থা, মানুষের বিহেভিওরিয়াল ব্যাপারগুলো আলোচিত হলেও সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যাপারটিই কিন্তু একেবারে পুরোপুরি উপেক্ষিত হয়েছে। সেটি হচ্ছে- ‘জীবন’। এটি কেবল হতাশার কথা- তাই নয়, এর চেয়ে বড় উদ্বেগের আর কিছু এ মুহূর্তে হতে পারে না।

আমাদের দেশে মানুষের সংখ্যা অনেক বেশি বলেই কি তাদের জীবন এত মূল্যহীন?

Covid-19, widely known as coronavirus disease, forced us to learn and adopt new healthy lifestyle practices, which are likely to continue in the post-recovery phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.

Non-pharmaceutical public health practices, including washing our hands with soap and coughing etiquettes should be strictly maintained as a part of our regular lifestyle.

'Lives or livelihood?' is the conflict haunting nations worldwide and Bangladesh is no exception. Whether to impose stricter restrictions to contain the virus or to relax such measures to earn livelihood has become the prime dilemma in the combat against the novel coronavirus.

Unlike previous months, Bangladesh is now experiencing a steeper rise in COVID-19 cases. The number of new infections has increased by more than 10,000 in less than two weeks. 

Bangladesh is facing supreme difficulties in managing the Covid-19 crisis due to its weak institutions. The trust between government and citizens is also low due to the inefficacy of the institutions. 
Covid-19 showed "no mercy" to more than 200 countries. Some countries are hit hardest and some resisted the intensity of this catastrophe. But, why are some countries able to fight the disease better than other countries? Multiple factors have been influencing the differentials in managing Covid-19 crisis in different countries.

বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার রোগত্বত্ত্ব বিশেষজ্ঞ ডা. মারিয়া ভ্যানকারকোভ তাই সরকারগুলোকে বারবার সাবধান করছেন অপেক্ষা করবার জন্য। একটা কার্যকরী ওষুধ বা ভ্যাকসিন না আসা পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করা ছাড়া আমাদের এখনও দ্বিতীয় কিছু ভাববার সময় আসেনি।
হার্ড ইমিউনিটির কথা বললে জনগণ বিভ্রান্ত হবে। পাশাপাশি যারা এতদিন সোশ্যাল ডিসটেন্সের নিয়ম মেনে চলছিল তারাও নিয়মের প্রতি উদাসীন হবে।

এক অনিশ্চিত ভবিষ্যতের শঙ্কার মাঝে সারা দুনিয়ার মানুষেরা আজ দুরতম সম্ভাবনার দিকে তাকিয়ে দিন গুনছে । আর সেই সম্ভাবনাকে সত্যি করে তুলবার প্রতিশ্রুতিতে দিনরাত পরিশ্রম করে চলেছেন এই গ্রহের সেরা বিজ্ঞানীরা । তারা সফল হবেন নিশ্চিত, পৃথিবী আবার স্বাভাবিক হবে । কিন্তু সেই সফলতার বিন্দুটিতে পৌছাতে লাগবে বেশ কিছু সময়। সেই সময়টুকুতে নিজেদের নাগরিকদের সুস্থ রাখবার জন্য সামাজিক দূরত্ব আর লকডাউন কে অপরিহার্য ঘোষণা করেছে রাষ্ট্রগুলি । এই গৃহবন্দীত্বের বড় মাশুল গুনতে বিপর্যস্ত অর্থনীতি – রাষ্ট্রনীতি । কিন্তু নাগরিকরা বেচে থাকলে ঘুরে দাঁড়ানো যাবে আবার একসাথে – এই মন্ত্রেই বোধকরি দেশগুলি একাট্টা ।

প্রতিবছর বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় বাজেট এদেশের সাংবাদিক, মিডিয়া, নীতিনির্ধারক, অর্থনীতিবিদ, সুশীল সমাজ, থিংক ট্যাঙ্ক এবং 'তথাকথিত' সোশ্যাল মিডিয়া চিন্তাবিদদের জন্য এক বিরাট গুরুত্বপূর্ণ 'উৎসব' হিসেবে আবর্তিত হয়। টেলিভিশনে প্রায় শতাধিক টক শো, বেশ কয়েকটি ফেসবুক প্লাটফর্মে হাজার হাজার সংলাপ এবং কয়েক হাজার সংবাদপত্রের আরটিকেলস (এটিসহ) কেবলমাত্র এই একটি বিশেষ ইস্যু (জাতীয় বাজেট) সম্পর্কে লক্ষ্য করা যায় এ মাসে।
